Love in the Palm of Your Hand

This sweet grey cheek parakeet is Forest, owned by Mike Dini. I had a grey cheek like this (his name was Peeper) for 20 years and he was snuggly like this, too. When my husband Bill¬† and I were dating back in the 80’s (ancient times), he lent me the money to buy Peeper – that green little ball of fluff was an integral part of our courtship, marriage, and day-to-day life. When he died it was like a piece of our history fell away. We miss him like crazy, and hope to get another grey cheek some day (as you grey cheek enthusiasts may know, these little birds are extremely hard to come by).

These little birds are so affectionate. They quickly rule your heart! They are soft, fluffy, and warm in your hand; also they love to snuggle under clothing and blankets.

Merry Christmas from Quantum Leaps and Pekabo, a grey cheek owned by Kathleen.

Did you notice the nose is missing from one of the mice? Guess who did that?

The Physics of Santa

I found this article in my favorite newsweekly magazine The Week. Experts did some calculations about what Santa would have to do to service all the homes he is purported to visit each year:

Experts have shown just how remarkable Santa Claus’ annual feat of delivering presents to the world’s good boys and girls really is.¬† Sweco, a Swedish engineering firm, calculated that assuming Santa visits 2.5 billion homes every Christmas, he has 34 microseconds per household to get in and out; that ‘s about a tenth of the time it takes for a housefly’s wing to flap once. To complete his task in 48 hours, Santa’s reindeer must travel at a speed of 3604 miles per second …

Another analysis makes Santa’s accomplishment even more astounding. It calculates that Santa’s sleigh, weighed down with presents and traveling at supersonic speed, would encounter such massive air resistance that it should burst into flame within 4 milliseconds of takeoff. T

The scientists could not explain how Santa manages to defy the laws of physics.

This is Pekabo, a Grey-cheeked Parakeet (actually a small parrot) owned by Kathleen, after his bath and before shaking off. We think he looks like an artichoke!

Joy of Bathing

Just look at these guys and gals. They are part of Carolyn’s flock, whom you may remember as the “parrots in a pear tree”from yesterday’s post. You can see the sheer joy and exhilaration of getting clean!

In Carolyn’s words:

This photo was taken at my parents’ house when we all moved in with them while my house was being remodeled. My parents are saints! They took in me, my three cats, and at that time, ten birds. Birds from the top right, going clockwise are:

Joey – Green Pacific Parrotlet

Simon – Blue Pacific Parrotlet

Marty – Normal Cockatiel

Alex – White-faced Cockatiel

Petey – Grey-cheeked Parakeet

Madison – Olive-throat Conure

Wendy – Grey-cheeked Parakeet

BB – Military Macaw

I guess the other two are up by the shower head. LOL! Wendy always hides under BB when I put them in the tub. The rest scramble for good places, which depends on what their goal is. Marty and Alex look for the best places to get wet. Some like to get wet, but don’t like standing in the waterfall all that much. The rest look for places to get away from the water altogether. Wendy is usually the only one that succeeds in getting under BB. The rest climb on her back or tail, looking for places to hide. Some enjoy taking a ride on her tail when she walks around. She’s pretty good about letting them do this, but sometimes she protests.

Carolyn says:

Kind of ironic having birds on a “dryer” rack getting “wet”, huh!? This is one of my favorite shower photos. I love Marty’s enthusiasm for getting wet! He loves to stand with his face in the spray! Afterwards, he sneezes a lot, because he gets water in his nares. LOL! Alex does the same thing, but she looks miserable rather than happy. I’m not sure why she doe sit if that’s really the way she feels. Maybe so Marty won’t be alone! LOL!

Let’s see if I can figure out who’s who…….

Starting from the front, left to right:

Row 1:

Simon – Blue Pacific Parrotlet

Wendy – Grey-cheeked Parakeet

Joey – Green Pacific Parrotlet

Alex – White-faced Cockatiel

Row 2:

Ping – Orange-chinned Parakeet

Petey – Grey-cheeked Parakeet

Marty – Normal Cockatiel

Row 3:

Madison – Olive-throat Conure

Gandalf – Grey-cheeked Parakeet
